You should check the UV forecast in order to make an informed decision about how to protect yourself from harmful radiation. UV rays may harm skin and eyes in the short and long terms.

Medium cloud density reduces UV index by approximately one half. In other words, cloudy weather in tropical areas give the same UV index as Norwegian mid summer. Spending time outdoors when the UV index is very strong or extreme, requires use of sunscreen with high or very high protection. The following is the European Union's recommendation of Sun Protection Factor (SPF):
- Low protection – SPF 14,9 or below
- Medium protection – SPF 15-30
- High protection – over SPF 30
- Very high protection – over SPF 50
